At Circuit, we leverage current technologies to deliver valuable, tech-enabled services. We keep a close watch on advancements and stay flexible and ready to adopt new technologies as they become available. We’ve remained vehicle-agnostic, adapting to the best EVs for specific use cases, and we've seen some incredible new vehicles come to market over the last couple of years. As a founder and a transportation/mobility nerd, I spend a lot of time thinking and reading about Autonomous Vehicles #AVs. I think we're experiencing an S-curve of sorts, typical of new technologies: it starts with initial hype, then there's skepticism after a few failures, and now we’re in a good trough, back to asking the hard questions. When will AVs be ready? Where are they most useful? What are the costs? How will they make early impacts? The hurdles are significant and I think there are 3 intial ones to overcome: technology, adoption (regulation and public acceptance), and costs. I'm particularly focused on the cost implications. The notion that 'it's cheaper without a driver' is, frankly, a cheap answer. Drivers provide many additional benefits beyond just operating the vehicle, and the costs of $1 million robots that need maintenance cannot be overlooked. Only recently, while listening to the Bg2 Pod with Bill Gurley and Brad Gerstner, did I find one of the very few discussions focused on these cost issues—about 45 minutes in and well worth your time. AVs require time, significant capital, really smart people, and invention and they can't be ignored. We're now digging into the crucial details and beginning to understand what it truly takes to integrate these technologies and when/where they make the most sense. Each segment of the industry—from autonomous trucks to low-cost shuttles to luxury rideshares—has its unique challenges and needs. It's encouraging to see these critical conversations taking place. The future of urban mobility will be electric, shared, connected and eventually, in some cases, autonomous. I know change won’t happen overnight; it won’t be a light switch moment, but it’s starting to happen and the right questions are being asked.
