About the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester: Since 1929, the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester has been a pioneer for social change through innovative programs that seek to improve the lives of women, children and families in the community. Each week, the YWCA serves over 4,000 women, children and their families through early education programs, summer camps, athletic and other community programs. The YWCA also provides a home for 193 low-income women at its Women's Residence. Meet Rashida Cartwright-Thigpen, one of our panelists for the Westchester Center for Racial Equity’s upcoming event, Community Conversation & Call to Action. On Monday, April 29 at the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester’s Activity Center, we will shine a spotlight on the experiences of women and girls of color in the criminal justice system and how we can decrease the disproportionate representation. Lurie, along with her fellow panel of experts will dive deep into the issues and discuss actionable steps to eliminate injustice. A little bit about Rashida: Rashida Cartwright-Thigpen has been a practicing attorney for the past 23 years. She graduated from North Carolina Central School of Law (Durham, NC) in 2001 and began her career at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. She was assigned to the Red Hook Community Justice Center, which is the nation’s first multi-jurisdictional community court, established in an effort to solve problems in the isolated Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn. In 2004, Ms. Cartwright-Thigpen accepted the position with the Westchester County Attorney’s Office and since then has had the task of representing the County in its prosecution of Juvenile Delinquency matters. A little bit about Kathie: Judge Davidson was the first African-American woman appointed as Supervising Judge in the Ninth Judicial District, and was the first woman and African-American to be appointed Administrative Judge in the Ninth Judicial District. Judge Davidson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Simmons University (formerly Simmons College) in Boston, Massachusetts, and her Juris Doctor at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Howard University Alumni Association, in addition to holding membership in numerous professional and volunteer organizations. A little bit about Lurie: Lurie Daniel Favors, Esq. serves as Executive Director at the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College. She is an author, activist and attorney with a long-standing commitment to racial and social justice. Ms. Daniel Favors earned her J.D. from New York University, where she was a Root-Tilden-Kern public interest scholar. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a BA in African and African American Studies, with a Minor in Spanish Language. She hosts the Lurie Daniel Favors Show on Sirius XM’s Urban View Network, a national, daily talk show that tackles issues of race, gender, culture, politics and the law. Ms. Daniel Favors is a contributing author to The Birth of a Nation: Nat Turner and the Making of a Movement and she authored Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl, which uses a natural hair journey as a metaphor for understanding the Black experience in the west. #FlashbackFriday On Tuesday, April 9, the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester, White Plains Hospital, and Burke Rehabilitation Center held an informative falls prevention program at the YWCA Women’s Residence on North Broadway. This special initiative was for individuals ages 65 and up. Twenty participants from the YWCA, which included 18 of our residents as well as 2 members, attended the event. Thank you to White Plains Hospital, the Burke Rehabilitation Center—we look forward to collaborating on future events for our members, residents, and the community! #YWCAWPCW
